Small communities are big winners in Revitalizing Westmoreland grants

WESTMORELAND COUNTY, May 16, 2018 – A community-focused program that encourages new, creative ways to revitalize communities in Westmoreland County has made $143,000 in new grants to small communities. The grants will fund nine small-to-medium sized innovative, capital projects. To spur local investment in the projects, communities that receive Revitalizing Westmoreland grants must also raise additional dollars on their own to fully fund the projects.

Critical Needs Alert raises $1.1 million to #FeedPGH

People experiencing food insecurity in Western Pennsylvania got a major boost last week when their neighbors donated $522,500 over a 16-hour period to The Pittsburgh Foundation’s #FeedPGH Critical Needs Alert. The May 1 online giving event, which was fortified with a $600,000 incentive pool from the Foundation and its donors, raised $1.1 million for Allegheny and Westmoreland Counties’ food pantries and the organizations that supply them.

Community Foundation to Oversee $300,000 Clean Vehicle Fund

Greensburg, Pa., Dec. 20, 2017 –  The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County (CFWC) has been chosen to oversee a $300,000 fund established under a Clean Air Act settlement with ArcelorMittal for air quality violations at the company’s Monessen coke plant.

$4.3 million federal grant assists Westmoreland firefighters

GREENSBURG, Pa. — A $10,000 planning grant from the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County to evaluate emergency response capability by volunteer fire departments has led to a $4.3 million funding award from the Federal Emergency Management Authority (FEMA) to fund recruitment and training of 500 additional volunteer firefighters for the county.

Murrysville resident awarded first We Are Franklin Regional scholarship

PITTSBURGH — The We Are FR Scholarship Fund, a shared community response to an April 2014 school violence incident at Franklin Regional High School, has made its first award. Abigail Lynch of Murrysville, Pennsylvania, who graduated from Franklin Regional High School in 2016, was awarded $1,000 toward her education at Pennsylvania State University where she is studying food science.

We are FR Scholarships

PITTSBURGH, Feb. 28, 2016 – This June, a member of the Class of 2016 of Franklin Regional School District will be awarded a college scholarship of up to $1,300 from the We Are FR Scholarship Fund. The scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who has a commitment to serving the community and is in need of financial assistance. Applications are due March 31. A volunteer committee appointed by the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County will meet in late April to review applications. The award will be announced in June.

Foundation elects first woman board chair

GREENSBURG, Feb. 15, 2016 – Board members of The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County (CFWC) have elected Gail Malloy their chair, making her the first woman to head the governing body in its 20-year history.

Malloy, a local entrepreneur and business owner who has been on the CFWC board since 2010, served the past two years as vice-chair.  She succeeds Regis Synan, president of F. Tinker and Sons, who will remain on the board.  Malloy will serve a two-year term.
